A $500 ‘nano-camera’ that can operate at the speed of light

Device could be used in medical imaging, collision-avoidance detectors for cars, and interactive gaming.

Researchers in the MIT Media Lab, have developed an Inexpensive “nano-camera” costing $500 that can operate at the speed of light .

The three-dimensional camera, which was presented last week at Siggraph Asia in Hong Kong, could be used in medical imaging and collision-avoidance detectors for cars, and to improve the accuracy of motion tracking and gesture-recognition devices used in interactive gaming.

The camera is based on “Time of Flight” technology like that used in Microsoft’s recently launched second-generation Kinect device, in which the location of objects is calculated by how long it takes a light signal to reflect off a surface and return to the sensor. However, unlike existing devices based on this technology, the new camera is not fooled by rain, fog, or even translucent objects, says co-author Achuta Kadambi, a graduate student at MIT.

“Using the current state of the art, such as the new Kinect, you cannot capture translucent objects in 3-D," Kadambi says. “That is because the light that bounces off the transparent object and the background smear into one pixel on the camera. Using our technique you can generate 3-D models of translucent or near-transparent objects.”

In a conventional Time of Flight camera, a light signal is fired at a scene, where it bounces off an object and returns to strike the pixel. Since the speed of light is known, it is then simple for the camera to calculate the distance the signal has travelled and therefore the depth of the object it has been reflected from.

Unfortunately though, changing environmental conditions, semitransparent surfaces, edges, or motion all create multiple reflections that mix with the original signal and return to the camera, making it difficult to determine which is the correct measurement.

Instead, the new device uses an encoding technique commonly used in the telecommunications industry to calculate the distance a signal has travelled, says Ramesh Raskar, an associate professor of media arts and sciences and leader of the Camera Culture group within the Media Lab, who developed the method alongside Kadambi, Refael Whyte, Ayush Bhandari, and Christopher Barsi at MIT and Adrian Dorrington and Lee Streeter from the University of Waikato in New Zealand.

“We use a new method that allows us to encode information in time,” Raskar says. “So when the data comes back, we can do calculations that are very common in the telecommunications world, to estimate different distances from the single signal.”

The idea is similar to existing techniques that clear blurring in photographs, says Bhandari, a graduate student in the Media Lab. “People with shaky hands tend to take blurry photographs with their cellphones because several shifted versions of the scene smear together,” Bhandari says. “By placing some assumptions on the model — for example that much of this blurring was caused by a jittery hand — the image can be unsmeared to produce a sharper picture.”

The new model, which the team has dubbed nanophotography, unsmears the individual optical paths.

In 2011 Raskar’s group unveiled a trillion-frame-per-second camera capable of capturing a single pulse of light as it travelled through a scene. The camera does this by probing the scene with a femtosecond impulse of light, then uses fast but expensive laboratory-grade optical equipment to take an image each time. However, this “femto-camera” costs around $500,000 to build.

In contrast, the new “nano-camera” probes the scene with a continuous-wave signal that oscillates at nanosecond periods. This allows the team to use inexpensive hardware — off-the-shelf light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can strobe at nanosecond periods, for example — meaning the camera can reach a time resolution within one order of magnitude of femtophotography while costing just $500.

“By solving the multipath problem, essentially just by changing the code, we are able to unmix the light paths and therefore visualize light moving across the scene,” Kadambi says. “So we are able to get similar results to the $500,000 camera, albeit of slightly lower quality, for just $500.”

Conventional cameras see an average of the light arriving at the sensor, much like the human eye, says James Davis, an associate professor of computer science at the University of California at Santa Cruz. In contrast, the researchers in Raskar’s laboratory are investigating what happens when they take a camera fast enough to see that some light makes it from the “flash” back to the camera sooner, and apply sophisticated computation to the resulting data, Davis says.

“Normally the computer scientists who could invent the processing on this data can’t build the devices, and the people who can build the devices cannot really do the computation,” he says. “This combination of skills and techniques is really unique in the work going on at MIT right now.”

What’s more, the basic technology needed for the team’s approach is very similar to that already being shipped in devices such as the new version of Kinect, Davis says. “So it’s going to go from expensive to cheap thanks to video games, and that should shorten the time before people start wondering what it can be used for,” he says. “And by the time that happens, the MIT group will have a whole toolbox of methods available for people to use to realize those dreams."

Cyber-shot RX10 premium bridge camera offers DSLR-style creative power without the need to carry interchangeable lenses
Cyber-shot RX10 premium bridge camera offers DSLR-style creative power without the need to carry interchangeable lenses

True portability doesn’t have to mean compromising the image quality, creative features and handling you’d expect from a bigger, bulkier camera system. An appealing additional ‘bridge-style’ camera for DSLR enthusiasts, the new Cyber-shot RX10 delivers superb picture quality without the need to pack a camera body plus several lenses for your next photo assignment.

The fixed Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mm (35mm equivalent) F2.8 lens[iv] offers superb levels of clarity and resolving power you’d expect from your interchangeable lens collection. With a versatile zoom range from wide- angle to telephoto, it’s a natural partner for atmospheric portraits, dramatic landscapes, wildlife, street scenes and naturally-lit interiors. The ability to focus at distances as short as 3cm also makes it ideal for detail- packed Macro close-ups of insects, flowers and more.

A bright F2.8 maximum aperture right across the full zoom range gives extra brightness you’d expect from your collection of interchangeable prime lenses. As well as letting you shoot in low light without increasing ISO settings, it also allows easy creation of smooth, circular background defocus (‘bokeh’) effects, enhanced by the 7-blade iris diaphragm. Optical SteadyShot inside assists clearer, blur-free images when you’re shooting handheld – even at longer focal lengths when hand-shake is a challenge for non-stabilised optics.

Comfortable to hold and generously equipped with manual controls, the Cyber-shot RX10 feels instantly familiar to anyone who’s handled a DSLR camera. Inside, the camera’s fixed-lens design achieves superb imaging performance in harmony with the large, sensitive image sensor and evolved BIONZ X processing engine that now offers approximately 3x improvement in processing speed compared to previous BIONZ processors.

As featured on the acclaimed DSC-RX100 II, the 20.2 effective megapixels (approx.) 1.0-type back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor is around four times bigger than your standard compact camera’s imager. Exquisite resolution and texture depiction is boosted further by the evolved BIONZ X engine that employs new detail reproduction, area- specific noise reduction and diffraction-reducing technologies for cleaner, even more beautiful and finely- detailed images.

Autofocus is speedy and responsive, thanks to the new Direct Drive SSM mechanism that works in conjunction with the Exmor R CMOS sensor and powerful BIONZ X processor. Lock-on AF accurately tracks moving subjects, keeping your target accurately focused even if it disappears momentarily from the frame and then reappears. Newly developed Eye AF ensures crisp portraits with the sitter’s eye always in sharp focus, even if they’re not looking directly at you. In addition, there’s now a choice of three selectable sizes for the spot AF frame. This cuts the risk of accidental focus errors with very small subjects, such as macro close-ups of insects.

Impeccable still shooting is matched by equally impressive capabilities for movie enthusiasts. The powerful new BIONZ X processor offers approximately three times the processing speed of Sony’s previous-generation BIONZ engine. Fully utilising the quality of the wide-aperture lens, it reads data from every one of the large sensor’s pixels to create extremely smooth, highly-detailed Full HD video. Movie footage can be captured at selectable 50p (AVCHD progressive) or cinematic 25p frame rates, with full control over P/A/S/M exposure modes. A ‘clear’ HDMI output allows video to be reviewed on an external monitor or recorded to a separate storage device.

An audio level meter and adjustable levels ensure that movies sound as good as they look. There’s a microphone jack and headphone output for accurate level monitoring. Adding the optional XLR-K1M adapter kit takes you into the world of pro-quality sound recording, allowing the addition of an external microphone via the balanced XLR terminal.

With a high resolution of 1440k dots, the new high-contrast OLED Tru-Finder offers crisp edge-to-edge visibility of your subject plus a wide 33° (approx.) viewing angle. For even more compositional freedom, the clear, bright 3.0-type White Magic™ LCD tilts up or down for easy framing with the camera held up high or low down.

Underlining its appeal to dedicated enthusiasts, the camera’s light, rigid magnesium alloy body features dust- and moisture-resistant seams and control seals for extra durability on location.

Intuitive, ergonomic operation is enhanced by plentiful controls that offer DSLR-style flexibility for advanced users. It’s possible to freely switch between two operating modes for the aperture ring. Get positive feedback with an audible ‘click’ as aperture is adjusted manually with the ring. Or switch modes for smooth, continuous adjustment without clicks – ideal if you’re shooting movies or don’t want to disturb your subject. There’s also a total of seven customisable buttons, plus a top-mounted LCD for instant confirmation of exposure and other key settings.

High-resolution still images can be displayed directly on a 4K television that offers four times the detail of Full HD. Support for TRILUMINOS Colour delivers a stunning palette of rich, natural colours when viewing movies and photos captured with the Cyber-shot RX10 on a compatible BRAVIA television with TRILUMINOS Display.

On-board Wi-Fi allows easy one-touch connection with your Xperia™ or NFC-compatible Android smartphone or tablet. Share photos wirelessly on your mobile device, or view them on your HD TV and other home networked devices. Installing PlayMemories Mobile Version 3.0 even lets you use your phone as a handy remote to fire the camera’s shutter. There’s a range of compatible accessories from Sony to expand your creative options even further. The LCJ-RXE is a premium jacket case that protects the camera from dust and knocks. Attach the ECM-XYST1M Stereo Microphone via the camera’s Multi Interface Shoe™ for crisp dialogue and ambient sounds while you’re shooting HD video. Or illuminate up your subject with the powerful HVL-F43M flash or battery-powered HVL-LEIR1 Video IR light.

The compact, all-in-one Cyber-shot RX10 digital camera from Sony is available from pre-order now from www.sony.co.uk on goes on general sale in Europe from mid-November.

The number of Internet users in India has reached 205 million in October this year, registering a Y-o-Y growth of 40% over last year. By December 2013, it is expected to reach 213 million. This was the major findings of the I-Cube 2013 report, released by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International, today.

The report also estimates that by June 2014, India will have 243 million internet users, at which point of time, it is expected to overtake the US as the second largest Internet base in the world. China currently leads with more than 300 million internet users while the US currently has estimated 207 million internet users.

Mr. Rajan Anandan, Chairman, IAMAI, said, "The Internet in India took more than a decade to move from 10 million to 100 million and only 3 years from 100 to 200 million. From here on, we can hope to develop a robust Internet ecosystem with a multitude of local and global players and a thriving Internet economy. Internet is now, clearly, mainstream in India".
According to the report, the number of internet users in urban India was 137 Million in October and is estimated to touch 141 Million by December 2013. Interestingly, rural India has witnessed a y-o-y growth of 58% of active Internet users since June 2012.

In Rural India, there were 68 Million Internet users in October and is estimated to reach 72 Million by December 2013.
According to the report, the number of mobile internet users has also witnessed a steady rise, with 110 million mobile internet users in October, and is estimated to reach 130 million by the end of December. In June, there were 91 Million users accessing the Internet on mobile devices, with 70.2 million users in urban India. This number rose to 85 million in October and is estimated grow by 47% and reach 103 Million by December 2013. Rural India is not that far behind in this regard with a base of 21 Million Mobile Internet Users in June 2013. It reached 25 Million in October 2013 and will touch 27 Million by December 2013. Mobile usage and hence, mobile internet usage has seen huge jump from the 2012 penetration levels. Compared to the 0.4% mobile internet users in 2012, the penetration has grown to 2.4%, indicating a substantial growth in the mobile internet user penetration levels.
The report further finds that more than 50% of the urban internet users access Internet daily. Remarkably however, this high frequency usage is not restricted to only the youth and the Working Men; this habit of accessing the Internet daily is seen among other demographic segments as well, including Older Men and Non-Working Women.

Mumbai with 12 million internet users is at first place ,  Delhi with 8.1 million internet users is at second place and Hyderabad with 4.7 million internet users at third.

In Rural India, 70% of the active internet users also access internet using mobile phones, while 32% use internet only through mobile. The Community Service Centers and Cyber Cafes are the main point of access for 40% of them.

Sony's PlayStation 4 (PS4), Price, Features and Specifications

Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4)
With official launch of PlayStation 4 (PS4) for US and Canadian markets on 15th November, 2013, Sony Computer Entertainment has taken next-generation home video-game console war to next level. The PS4 system is retailing now in the United States for USD $399.99 and in Canada for CAD $399.99. In addition, one can buy PlayStation Camera and DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controllers for $59.99 each. As successor to PlayStation 3, it will fight for its space in eighth generation of video game consoles with Nintendo's Wii U and Microsoft's Xbox One.

In India, PlayStation 4 (PS4) is all set for its official launch in mid December. Snapdeal has listed PS4 for pre-order with a price tag of Rs 40,000 ($632) and release date of December. For PS4 official price in India, Sony had decided to wait for sometime, because of the volatile Rupee. In all probability its Indian price will be in the range from Rs 35,000- Rs 38,000. At present, PS4 console is budlled with 20 first and third party games. As per Sony, by India launch in mid December, or by year end, console will have over 30 games .

Leaving behind the complexities of earlier PlayStation 3 architecture, present PlayStation 4 features a simpler but 10 times more powerful AMD processor which employs Single-chip, custom design 8 cores CPU "Jaguar", with next-generation Radeon™ based graphics engine. New adoptataion in processor, is likely to create a larger pool of game developers and support system. In PS4, with "share" button on the new wireless controller and live streeming of in-game play video from friends, emphasis is clearly on social gamming.

Sony started its development programme on eighth-generation video game console way back in 2008. After months of delays due to production issues, when PlayStation 3 was finally launched around two years back, the sale of Microsoft's Xbox 360 was already approaching 10 million units and PS3 found it self late by one year in the sale game. This time Sony was better positioned to avoid repeating the same mistake with PS3's successor

The Most Powerful System

Stunning graphics performance, unparalleled customised memory and processors with 10 times the power of PlayStation 3 have given the most innovative minds in the games industry free rein when it comes to creating experiences that are bigger, bolder, more immersive. Remote Play
Remote Play on the PS4 system fully unlocks the PlayStation Vita system’s potential, making it the ultimate companion device. With the PS Vita system, gamers will be able to play a range of PS4 titles on the beautiful 5-inch display over Wi- Fi access points in a local area network.
